The Medium Library made in collaboration with Nikki Bennett and Emma Ireton.

The Medium Library is a proposed permanent installation in Pioneer Park to fuel community building and engagement. The purpose of this space is to take, share, and borrow from resources provided by the community itself. This concept is inspired by the Free Little Libraries around the Salt Lake City area. The Medium Library is ever changing and built upon as people come and go through the park. The form directly reflects the purpose with its sturdy rectangular form, and the bright colors of each shelf inviting you in to explore.

The structure itself is built out of MDF, or Medium-density fiberboard with an internal structure of 2”x4”s and around 300 screws. This drawing shows the 3D model that was made to measure each side fitting together with all of the shelves in place. The 4 sides are shown with the shelf measurements and the color correlates to the ones used in the built structure. Each shelf is 10” deep, however they very in height and width. This design exploration was exciting for us as designers to practice our physical making skills and bring something this large to life. It felt perfect that we were collaborating, making something for people to use collaboratively.
